What Is The Difference Between Pigmented And Dye Based Ink ?

The Difference Between Pigmented Ink And Dye Based Ink

Dye based inks are basically "water soluble". They are made from materials that dissolve.  Pigment based inks have larger particles that are suspended in the solution and are delivered , to  the paper or media being printed on by the solution.

This leads to two primary differences in the two inks. Since the dyes actually dissolve in the water they will dissolve again with contact by liquids. Pigment based inks are somewhat water resistant but not totally. The second difference is the vibrancy of the print output.  Because  Dye based ink have a higher density (the particles are closer together or actually do a molecular bond with the liquid) they create a greater vibrancy than do pigmented inks.

Recently Archival Inks or UV Resistant Inks have been gaining
in popularity because of the explosion in in home digital imaging.
