Sony HT-DDW900 Complete 5.1-Channel DVD Home Theater System with HDMI

In a previous session I commented on purchasing the Panasonic TH42PX60U Plasma TV and my brief and general review of the TV is available here.

In advance to purchasing a big screen plasma TV I had already decided that I would also be buying a Home Theater System with 5.1 Channel Sound.  I mean buying a large screen TV without a Home Theater System is like buying a car without wheels or a house without heating or cooling.

I looked at several models of Home Theater Systems and many of the higher end systems were very appealing.  Most notable of the higher end
home theater systems was the Sony DAV-FX900W system. Unfortunately the 700 dollarish price tag was a bit too much for my wallet.

Let's begin by saying that the setup was fairly straight forward, however, with any surround sound system the speaker placement is critical.  Plan on spending a bit of time playing with the placement of the speakers in order to maximize the "surround sound effect".  The speakers that come with the  Sony HT-DDW900 Complete 5.1-Channel DVD Home Theater System would not be described as "space age" cool by my generation. The 5 satellite speakers (2 front, 2 rear, and 1 center channel) appearance
is rather simple but compact. Dimensions for the speakers are 6.12 by 3.75 by 4 inches.  The receiver is 16.88 by 6.25 by 12.5 inches.

Performance wise this unit packs 900 watts of total output, 200 watts for the subwoofer and 140 watts for each of the 4 satellite speakers.  What this translates into is wall vibrating crisp audio. This is movie theater sound "on the cheap".

By the way my only regret in buying this combo is that I did'nt dig up enough money to spring for a 50" Plasma TV such as the Panasonic TH-50PX60U
